September 6th, 2024.

Today, we join in mourning the tragic loss of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a beloved Turkish-American dual citizen and University of Washington alum, who was killed by Israeli forces during a protest in the West Bank. Aysenur’s death is a heartbreaking reminder of the immense human cost of this ongoing conflict, and we grieve with her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her.

In speaking with members of our community, I have come to understand just how extraordinary Aysenur – also known as Aysha – truly was. She was a brilliant organizer and activist, with a quiet strength and wisdom that touched many lives. Aysenur believed deeply in the causes she supported and never hesitated to speak up for what was right. The compassion she showed to those around her leaves behind a legacy of solidarity, care, and love that will never be forgotten.

Aysenur believed that we need to do more– that solidarity is not just an ideal, but a responsibility we all share. Her life and legacy should ignite in all of us the determination to create a future where no family suffers such loss. We owe it to her memory – and to each other – to end this violence and build a world rooted in freedom, justice, and human dignity.

Aysha, your unwavering courage and boundless compassion will continue to light our path forward and inspire us all.

In Grief and Solidarity,
Darya
